Frequently Asked Questions

12 common questions answered

What are the known NHTSA recalls for a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
The NHTSA has issued 2 recall campaigns affecting the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV: a high-voltage battery fire risk and a rear brake caliper issue that can reduce braking performance. Specifically, the battery recall (GM recall N202311730) limits full charge to 90% as an interim remedy, and the brake caliper/ brake system recall (GM recall 18279) requires bleeding the rear brake system. These summaries come from NHTSA records; Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues can check your VIN and confirm any open campaigns.
How do I check if my 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV has an open recall?
Enter your VIN on NHTSA.gov or bring your vehicle to Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues and we will check for free. You can also call Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or use our service scheduler to schedule service for a free VIN recall check.
How much does a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV recall repair cost?
Manufacturer recall repairs are free of charge when performed at an authorized dealer. At Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues, recall repairs use OEM parts and factory-trained technicians at no cost; ask about our service financing if you need other non-recall work right away.
Can I get my 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV recall fixed at an independent shop or do I need a dealer?
Recall repairs must be completed by an authorized dealer to ensure the correct parts, software updates, and factory diagnostics are used. Independent shops may not have GM-authorized software updates (for example the HPCM2 reprogramming for the battery recall) or access to OEM replacement parts—visit our schedule service page to book at Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues, your local certified Chevrolet dealer near Jacksonville, FL.
How long does a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV recall repair take?
Most recall repairs are completed in a few hours to a day depending on parts and scheduling; some software updates are quick while mechanical fixes may take longer. Battery software updates that limit charge to 90% can be brief, while brake system work can require inspection and bleeding; use our schedule appointment link to book a convenient time.
Does an open recall affect my 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV's trade-in or resale value?
Yes—open recalls can reduce resale and trade-in value because buyers and dealers review NHTSA history and may discount vehicles with unresolved safety campaigns. Resolving recalls at a Chevrolet franchise dealership like Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues documents the repair with OEM records and protects vehicle value; learn about trade-in options on our appraisal page at sell-your-car-online.htm.
Can I fail a state inspection because of an unresolved 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV recall?
Some recalls that affect safety systems (like brakes or seat belts) can cause issues during state inspections or safety checks if the defect affects required equipment. If you are concerned about inspections in Jacksonville, FL, contact Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues or schedule service so our factory-trained technicians can inspect and, if necessary, perform the free recall repair.
Safety Risks You Can't Ignore
The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV faces safety recalls that require immediate attention to protect you and your passengers. The battery recall from NHTSA (GM recall N202311730) identifies a risk that the high-voltage battery could catch fire when charged to or near full capacity; as an interim measure dealers reprogram the HPCM2 to limit charge to 90%. Another NHTSA recall (GM 18279) addresses rear brake caliper pistons with an insufficient coating that can form gas pockets, potentially reducing braking performance. Reduced braking or a battery-related fire are serious safety hazards that can increase crash risk and personal injury. Ignoring recalls can also affect insurance claims and liability in a collision. At Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues our factory-trained technicians use OEM diagnostic tools and follow GM repair procedures to resolve these exact issues at no charge to you. If you suspect a problem, please schedule service immediately; we prioritize safety and will explain recommended actions and any interim precautions, like limiting charge levels or parking outside until repairs are made.
